In “IT SMELLS LIKE FREEDOM”, Najia Mehadji creates a spiral movement, the “volute”, the floral canvas that represents the flow of life. The volute is the transformation of the flower, the disintegration of the whole in favor of the essence. It expresses an interior rhythm of continuous lines or threads, which create a breath, a shadow, and a dance… a body movement that silhouettes the gesture of the hand. At a certain moment, in the space of the canvas, the flowers represent a union… the embracing of the spirit and the gesture. The climax is the calligraphy of femininity. It is the Arabesque, the Sufism and the Mystic Dance… the chant for freedom. An act traditionally reserved for men but performed sensually by the volute.
